Libriomancer

Libriomancer
Jim C. Hines
Magic Ex Libris
Urban Fantacy

Summary
Isaac Vainio is now a librarian but he was once more than that, he is a Libriomancer. Libriomancer's are wizards that have the ability to pull objects and magic from books. A light saber from star wars, sting from the hobbit or a mental fish that translates languages from a hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy.

A few years ago he made a mistake and it almost got him killed so now he is band from using his magic. Until the day 3 different kinds of vampires pulled from the pages of books attacks his library and he is forced to use his magic again.

Isaac services the attack but learns from an old Dryad friend that the vampires are on the attack and the founder of his order Gutenberg the creator of the printing press has been kidnapped. With little time and his friends in danger Isaac must once again dive in to the books he loves and the magic that has been taken from him, but will he be strong enough to stand against the darkness that is coming for them all?

Review
Libriomancer is one of the most interesting and original books I have read in a long time. Who among use has not dreamed of pulling the tools and magic from favorite books. In a way this is a fantasy version of something that we already do. As readers we take the ideas, magic and the science out of these books and make them part of our lives. Because of that this books magic and world often feel more real than other fantasy story told in the modern era.

The book is also interesting in its plot and the characters are fun and easy to connect with. The twist and turns are not hard to guess but are interesting in there execution. There are some parts that are a little slow and the author sometimes gets stuck in his own love of books and references. So if you also love fantasy/sci-fi books then its fun but it can get a little distracting at parts.

Over all this has a super fun read that I would recommend to anyone who loves books as much as I do.

I would give this book an 7.9 out of 10.

Someone is hacking the game and Hideo wants her find him them before the hacker does something truly bad. To do that Emika will be offered a once in a life time opportunity, a spot in the world championship.

Review
This book is a great read. I have tried reading books by Marie Lu before and I did not care for them but I could not put this one down. She has created a future that I think we can all see coming and a main character that we all have been at one time or another. This story feels real but with enough action and mystery to keep the reader on their toes.

The future that Marie Lu brings to light is a natural step from the world we are in now. It feels both sci-fi and real at the same time. The tech is interesting without bogging the story down in a lot of technical mumbo jumbo that the reader does not need.

The main character Emika is interesting and strong. She is smart, funny and feminine. She feels like a friend I've known before but at the same time she is unique and interesting. The other character both allies and enemies all feel well thought out and three dimensional.

The story is fun, interesting and easy to follow but with enough action and surprises to keep the reader coming back for more.

I give this book an 8.5/10.

Review

I loved this book. it has action, comedy, mystery and just a touch of romance. Fans of the Dresden files and Shadowrun will love this original and interesting look at the magical post-apocalyptic world that Ilona Andrews has created.

Often this book it put in to the romance section but I think that is a mistake. Although later in the series there is a far amount of romance it is both natural and appropriate while still being hot and romantic later in the books. This is 100% a book that men and women can enjoy and will love.

I found this book late last year and I have already reread the whole series four times. These books are quick and easy to read but with the depth and substance of much longer books. They are smart but can be read and enjoyed by all people.

I truly cannot same enough about how good this series is. The main character is smart and interesting. she is a women who is independent and fights way outside her magical wait class for the little guy and those who need her help. At the same time the men in the story feel like men they are strong and smart and interesting.

The author has created a world of fear and chaos but in that she has shown us that even the worst of times there is light and good people everywhere. This book is amazing and I hope everyone gives it a chance even if it’s not your thing.

This book and the series as a whole get 10 out of 10.

When the unrest in the Scythdom spills over in to their lives Citra and Rowan they will not just be competing for a job, they will be fighting for their lives.

Review

I loved this book. It was fresh and new. The look at how a world, that many man would dream of, could be just as messed up as our own is interesting and original. This future with no death is both inspiring and terrifying at the same time. This is a story that is about youth growing up but only those who understand death, as an adult does, can truly comprehend this novel.

The main two characters of the book share the first person perspective. The author jumps back and forth between them as needed by the story. The writing is well done and the flow of the book is quick, pulling you along as the read. There are little passages at the start of each chapter, they look like nothing but I recommend reading them as it adds a lot to the book.

I would recommend this book to everyone over the age of 14. It’s funny, interesting, and action packed. Personally I have already read it two times and it came out this year.

I give this book 9.5 out of 10.

An empire at constant war, a people oppressed and enslaved, a boy consumed by rage, and a girl whose heart and mind are heading in to different directions.

"Review"
I really enjoyed this book. This book has the feel of a teen romance but in truth the book takes a much more interesting social stance. The book not only focuses on finding yourself and keeping love like most teen books but also on what makes an action a good one. how do you know what is right and when do we brake our own rules for the right thing.

So not only is this a interesting book with strong characters and a powerful plot line but it also will make the reader think and push them to be more then they where before.

I have found that more and more these day books are like candy it tasks good but does little for you. This book is more like a nice burger it task good but it also has everything you need to grow.

I would give this book an 8.3 out of 10

"Review"
Jim Butcher has done it again. This book is amazing. Ever sense the genre of stream punk became popular I have been looking for a book which represented how I imagined a steam punk world to been, and until I read this book I had not found one.

I could tell you all about how well written this book is, or how interesting the characters are, or even how the unique world creates a whole new experience for the reader, but lots of books have these things. To truly understand how good this book is without reading it is impossible.

For me this book is everything I look for in a book but rarely if ever do I find it. This is not only a must read its a must own and a must read again and again.

I this book gets a 10 out of 10.

The Rithmatist

The Rithmatist
Brandon Sanderson
Rithmatist Series
Historical Fantasy

"Summary"
Joel wants to be a Rithmatist more then anything in the wolrd. He is more skilled at the geometric like magic, then anyone else his age sadly he is not a Rithmatist and he never will be. The Rithmatists are the only defense humanity has against the chalklings who threaten the united american islands.

When young Rithmatists start to disappear from there homes with out a trace. Joel and Melody are assigned to assist a Rithmatist professor to find out what is happening before the threat becomes to much for them to handle. The only problem is who can Joel really trust and can a norm really stand among the magical Rithmatists?

"Review"
Brandon Sanderson has done it again. His new book Rithmatist is a new must read for children and adults alike. The story takes place in an alternate america, where the states are all a collection of islands around the turn of the century. This makes the world really interesting because it is both historical and fantastic.

The magic in this book is just as interesting. Rithmatist magic is a mix of both math and Art. Using chalk the Rithmatist can make lines, circles, and other geometrical shapes to both protect themselves and attack there enemies. Rithmatists can also draw Chaklings, two demenchanal drawings that draw power from the Rithmatists artistic skill and emotional conection to the drawing.

Joel is an amazing character. He is both brilliant but also limited by his lack of Rithmatist power. He is therefore very easy to connect to and I felt that he was able to live the his adventure with him. The writing was a little more basic then most of his other work because this book is for young adults but that does not mean that is it lacking in quality at all.

I loved this book and I can't wait until the next one comes out. If you like his other books or are just looking for an amazing and quick read then check out his book.

I would give this book an 8.9 out of 10.

Uprooted

Uprooted

Now with the corrupted woods encroaching on the kingdom and corrupting its people will Agnieszka and the Dragon survive each others long enough to stop the woods?

Review
This book is an amazing and original look at two very well known fair tale ideas. The virgin sacrifice and the evil forest. Naomi Novik does a great job at taking an idea we all know really well and presenting it to her readers in a new light. This book really made me think but also entertained me the who way through.

I was pulled through this book by its powerful narration and compelling characters. I have had the opportunity to read Novik's other book series Temeraire and whether you like it or not you will like "Uprooted". This is a book that is a most read for any young adult or not so young adult.

I would say one thing though, this book is promoted as a young adult novel but it can be a little graphic and upsetting at times i would not recommencement this book for children under the age of 16.

I would give this book a 8.4 out of 10.

Deadweather and Sunrise

Deadweather and Sunrise
Geoff Rodkey
Young Adult Fantasy
The Chronicles of Egg

Summary
Egg lives on Deadwearther an ugly, smelly island full of pirates and cutthroats. Sadly this this not the worst part of Eggs life. His mother died giving birth to him and his family hates him for it. So with siblings who hate him and an abusive father what is a overly smart boy to do.

One day Eggs father finds something odd in the hills and takes them all to the Island of Sunrise, the jewel of the island, to find out what it is. Soon after arriving his family is met by a nice man who invites them over for dinner. As they get to know the new family Egg's dad and siblings has an accident. Now Egg is all alone, living with a family he does not know and something is very wrong.

Review
This is a great book written my a new author. Egg is a smart interesting character that is both believable and incredible, which is hard to do for a writer. Often in books characters are ether annoyingly perfect or ridiculously incompetent. Egg though is a real and balanced character that helps the reader to feel like they are in the story with him.

This odyssey like adventure leads the reader to down a magical path to find love, friendship and family. And although this is just the start of Egg's adventures this book is a good stand alone novel for both children and adults.

I would give this book an 8.1 out of 10. I can;t wait to see what else this amazing author puts out.

Written in Red

"Written in Red"
Anne Bishop
A Novel of the Others
Urban Fantasy

"Summary"
When the world began there where only the Others, creators great and horrible. Shapeshifters, vampires, Elementals and beings so terrible that even the Others fear them. Then came Humans into the world. The humans and the Others fought for centuries until a deal was finally made between the two groups. The Others would provide the land and the humans will provide the industry.

One night in the modern age a young women running from her passed wonders into the Others Courtyard searching for safety and a job. The leader of the Courtyard finds her odd she is human but she does not smell like prey. Finding this interesting he hires her to be the liaison between the humans and the Others.

This young women is Meg Corbyn. She has the power to see the future when her skin is cute. For all of her life she has been kept a prisoner and used by others to make money of off her pain. Now for the first time in her life she is free to make her own choices and be who she is.

But who is she? and what is happening to her new friends?

"Review"
This is an amazing book. Meg is an amazing characters. Over the last few years I have been really disappointed in the writing of female characters. Ether the characters are whinny, uncertain, and immature or she is overly masculine, mannish, and unbelievable as a rounded female character. Meg on the other hand is a well balanced character who is both strong and feminine, intelligent and innocent. She is a compelling focus for the novel which leads the reader down a unique vision of how the world would be if monsters truly excited.

I have now read all three of the books that have come out sense 2015, and they are all just as good as the first one. The writer, she has created a world that is interesting and unique for her readers. The secondary characters feel real and complete. The story is strong and pulls the readers through the book all the way to the last page.

I give this book 9 out of 10.

Earth Girl

"Earth Girl"
Janet Edwards
Sci-fi

Out of anger at her life and hatred of the norms, Jarra applies to an off world school with has its first year on earth. Her plan is to be better than they are and then reveal to them who she really is, but when faced with people can she really go through with her plan?

Review
This book is amazing. I believe that anyone who works in the mental health field or knows someone with a mental or physical illness needs to read this book. This book follows the tradition of Science Fiction where it challenges social norms and beliefs that are hard to face head on. In this case it challenges our treatment and understanding of those we would call handicapped.

I work would with children who have varying kinds of mental and social disabilities. And I myself am so dyslexic that I could not read properly until I was 16 years old. I tell you this because I want you to understand how liberating this book was for me.

People often do not want to read a book or watch a movie about people who are handicapped because it makes us feel sad or uncomfortable. Also they are often not very action packed and so therefore do not draw a lot of attention from the average reader. This book is different.

In this book the writer invents an illness that is impossible to exist. The main character is as normal as you or me. She is smart, strong and kind. But in her world she is living with a debilitating handicap. Because of this we as the reader get the chance to look without fear or awkwardness in to the lives of those who are different and to see how often what we do to be nice is more painful then the things people do on purpose to be mean.

I have read thousands of books in my life and very few of them have touched me in such a personal and profound way. If you are looking for a book that will challenge your way of thinking and help you to understand those who are different from you, but is also fun, interesting and adventurous. Then this is the book for you.

For me this book is a 10 out of 10.

Gates of Thread and Stone

"Gates of Thread and Stone"
Lori M. Lee
Sci-fi/Fantacy
Gates of Thread and Stone #1

Summary
Imagine a world in which magic and technology developed and competed side by side. For a long time magic was dominated. But as time moved on technology coat up to the wonders of magic and made it so that anyone with the press of a button could perform wonders.

Fearing the end of the way of magic, they attacked those devoted to the way of technology. This led to a war that destroyed everything. Magic all but left the world and few advanced tech remained.

From that destruction, one town came in to being. A town of pain and cruelty. A time of fear and death. but with in that is one girl who is good and light, and although she does not know it yet she just might be the answer to everyone’s wish for a better life.

Review
I really enjoyed this book. The world was pretty cool; it really reminds me of that old 1980's movie "Wizards". Although the book is not quite as weird as that movie. The main character was interesting and the writing style was quick passed and engaging.

The plot was a little simple. She basically wrote the "heroes journey", but in an attempt to be something else, she often got side tracked and started going in odd directions. Luckily by page 100 she gets in to her groove and focuses on what she really wants to say. That’s when I was hooked. The author is still finding her voice but what she had written is amazing.

I would give this book a 7.8 but if the next ones in the series are increasingly good I would increase that to and 8 something.

Allies and Assassins

Allies and Assassins
Justin Somper
Enemies of the Prince, #1
Fantasy Mystery/Adventure

Summary
As the next in to the princedom Jared lived a almost care free life. Yes he has to hunt and go to boring meetings but for the most part he is left to himself. Also Jared knows that when his brother has kids he will be removed from the line of succession. Sadly for him all that is about to change.

The great prince Anders has been murdered, and Jared must now run the princedom. But with the death of his brother over his head and the council fighting each other and plotting against each other will Jared have time to learn how to rules the country before he himself becomes the target of assassination?

Review
I Really enjoyed this book. The writing was clear and strong. The characters are interesting and relatable. I spent the whole book with my mind racing trying to both find the killer and understand the political back baiting and undercutting taking place around Jared the main character.

The story really pulled me in and I enjoyed the time the author took to help the reader understand not only the main characters but also everyone else. Because of this the book had a sense of completeness to the world and the people in it.

My only real problem with the book was that I guessed who the killer was within one page of meeting him. And although the book does a good job of trying to cover up the killers actions and confuse the reader. I still knew it was him so this made a lot of the false tracks in the book boring and uninteresting.

Over all I would give this book a 7.5 out of 10, but I think the next book has a lot promise and if its good this number may go up.

Nightshade

Nightshade
Andrea Cremer
Nightshade Series

But will she have the strength to turn against everything and everyone she has known for the love of a strange boy and the hope of true freedom?

Review
Over the entire book was pretty good. The plot and characters where pretty similar to a lot of romantic fantasy that I have been seeing sense twilight came out, but as fare as the genre goes this one was one of the best.

The plot twists are simple but powerful. The ideas shown in the book are interesting and compelling; especially to a young reader who is questioning there place in the world as we all did.

In the end the whole series is quite good and worth a look. The ending of the book was great but the ending of the series pissed me off a lot, although I do find that does happen a lot.

I would give this book a 7.8 out of 10.

Review
This is a good book for teens and young adults. Although this book will never be in my top 10 favorite books of all time it is still really good. I read through the whole book very quickly and never even put it down.

The main character is strong and powerful. She is both honest and strong. The writer has created a world that we both know and that is new to us. The book is interesting in many ways and worth a quick read.

I would give this book a 6.8 to 10.

Saga

"Saga"
Brian K. Vaughan
Saga Monthly Comic
Fantacy/Sci-fi

Summary
The largest planet in the know universe is at war with its own Moon. One side winged humanoids focused on science. The other side are horned humanoids who use magic. For years and years the planet and its own moon, science and magic, fought a bloody war causing massive destruction on both of their worlds.

Over time the war was outsourced to other worlds until it covered the whole galaxy. In the end every world has been made to choose a side. Science or magic, horns or wings, planet or moon.

In all of this war and chaos two lovers, one from the moon the other from the planet, find each other and marry. Now with a baby on the way will they be able find safety from both sides of the war? Will they ever find a place to call home, and can they create a peace or just greater war.

Review
This is an amazing comic book. This comic might be the best one writing in the last 10 or 20 years. I would put in on par with "Watchmen", "V for Vendetta" and "Sandman". So far there is only three collected volumes but it is still on going.

The story is rich and full. The characters are likable but honest. Whenever I read one of these comics I can't put it down and when I'm done I crave more. This story is about war, love and family. It is powerfully emotional, but also highly relatable.

The writer also blends science fiction and fantasy perfectly in a way I have never seen before. Other writers have tried to blend these two but it has always felt awkward to me, until now.

There is one thing I would say is a negative. The comic is a little overly gratuitous, to the point of being border line pornographic at parts. The violence can also be extreme and unpleasant to see. This means that this comic in not for anyone under the age of 18.

Over all I would give this comic book a 9.5 out of 10.

Vampire Academy

"Vampire Academy"
Richelle Mead
Vampire Academy #1
Supernatural Romance

Summary
In the heart of Montana there is a school. Like most schools this one has teachers, students and classes. the school teaches math, science and history. In almost every aspect this school is like any other high end academy, except for the fact that this one is full of Vampires.

Rose is a Dhampir and the personal body guard in training to her best friend, Lissa, the last vampire princess of her line. Both of them went to the vampire academy for years but after being warned by a teacher of a threat against Lissa's life they ran away.

Now after living on there own for two years they are heading back to the academy, but after being on there own for so long can they fit back in with the other students? Even worse can they find out who is trying to kill them?

Review
The best way to think of this book is Harry Potter Meets Twilight. It has a little more romance then Harry Potter but a lot more action then Twilight. Over all I really enjoyed this book and the whole series. It was a fun quick read.

This book also adds some interesting ideas to the vampire myth and Mead has created a world that leads the reader to wish they where a part of it. The characters and world are very compelling, and help the reader to believe in the impossible.

My only real complaint was that the writing was a little awkward in her delivery of the story. She had more then one time in which I wanted more or less information. The good news is that she fixes most of these problems in the next book and all of them by the end of the series.

Over all I would give this book a 7.3 out of 10. Fun, creative, and interesting.

Priceless

"Priceless"
Shannon Mayer
Rylee Adamson Series #1
Modern Fantasy

Summary
Rylee is a seeker. If you don't know what that means your not part of our world and you should stop reading right now, burn this book and pray you did not catch the attention of anything more powerful then yourself.

If you are from our world, she can help you. Rylee can find anyone for you no matter where they are and she can stand with you against the darkness. She has allies from across the magical world, but she also has enemies.

The FBI is investigating Rylee for her sister's death from five years ago, and for her involvement in the finding of several kidnapped children.

So if you are desperate and in need of help call Rylee Adamson.

Review
This is a really fun book. If you have read the Dresden files you will love this book. The Rylee books is a watered down version of the Dresden files with a strong female main character, and a more romantic vibe.

I really liked the book. The over all feel was strong and involved. Mayer took an original view on many classic horror and fantasy monsters. I was pulled into the story and plot my powerful characters, strong hooks and interesting twists and turns.

To be honest I was really scared of reading this book because I found it on amazon with my Kindle. This book is mostly self published and all of this lead me to be a little nerves. Don't be though, this book is great and the writer should be on your list of your favorite books.

I would give this book an 8.1 out of 10.

Divergent

"Divergent"
Veronica Roth
dystopia
(Divergent #1)

Summary
War, mature, crime, and suffering are all cased by the weakness in human kind. We often fail to live up to the most important attribute that would lead to an end to all of this. But what attribute would that be? The world has divided itself in to five factions based on which human attribute leads to a better world. Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent).

Beatrice is a young Abnegation who is turning sixteen. At that age all children must choice whether to stay with the faction of their birth or choose another. Luckily there is a test given to all children before their choosing telling them which faction would be best.

Like all children before there test Beatrice was scared for her test. But knowing that after this test she would know what to do made it better. Sadly for her she was wrong. During her test something went wrong after it the tester told her that she different, she was divergent. This meant that unlike most people Beatrice was equally suited to mutable factions and that was dangerous.

To protect herself Beatrice picked a new faction against her parents’ wishes. But will her new faction saver her or put her in more danger.

Review
I know I'm a little late on this book. With the movie coming out and the books popularity there are a lot of reviews out there, but a friend gave me this book and I had to review it.

I really loved this book. Throughout the story I feel with the main character. She is both strong and vulnerable which leads to a feeling of connection that is often hard to create in novels. I also really liked that the main love interest is a strong male role model.

I also enjoyed the basic concepts of the book. It feels both real and futuristic. The story builds on basic human ideas that we all know and understand. This leads to a thought provoking story that is not to difficult for the average man to understand and enjoy.

I do have one problem with it over all. As good as the book is and as much as I liked it there was just something missing. I got to the end of the book and felt a little lost. The writer fits a lot of the most powerful stuff in to the end chapters and it creates an awkward feeling for the reader.

Over all I would give this book 8.2 out of 10.
